Who we are

Information Officer

Cookies & analytics

We use necessary cookies to operate the site. With your consent we also use analytics and/or marketing cookies. These are only set after you opt in via our consent banner; you can change your choice at any time. We do not set non-essential cookies if you decline.

Contacting us

We don’t use an email contact form. When you tap to message us, your phone opens WhatsApp with your message ready to send, and you send it yourself. Nothing you type on this site is stored here or collected in the background: we only see a message once you choose to send it over WhatsApp.

WhatsApp carries that message (it is run by Meta, under its own terms). Once you reach us, we keep your number and what you sent so we can reply and help you enrol. We do not sell or share your details, or use them for marketing without your separate consent.

Members’ information

When you enrol yourself or your child, we collect what we need to run a class safely and to award grades: the member’s name and age, a parent or guardian’s contact details, any relevant medical conditions or allergies, and an emergency contact. Enrolment is done on a paper form, where this is set out in full and your consent is recorded.

Most of our members are children. Under POPIA, a child’s personal information is special personal information, so we process it only with the consent of a parent or guardian, and only to run the class: attendance, safety, grading through the Association of Funakoshi Shotokan Karate SA, and keeping you informed about training.

We sometimes take photographs or video in class, which we may use on our Facebook page or this website. We ask for separate, specific consent for that on the enrolment form, and you may withdraw it at any time by telling the instructor or phoning us. We will not publish an image of a child whose parent or guardian has not agreed to it.

We keep members’ information only while they train with us and for a reasonable period afterwards for grading and administrative purposes. We do not sell it, and we do not share it for marketing. Grading records are shared with the Association of Funakoshi Shotokan Karate SA, which awards the grades.

Your rights under POPIA

You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of the personal information we hold about you. To exercise these rights, phone us on 079 061 7956.
